Acute Paediatric Infections

As young children are exposed to many germs around them, it is not uncommon for them to fall sick as they are growing up. Be it vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cough, a sore throat or painful ears; Dr. Wong will help your child feel better.

Common colds

Fever, cough, runny or stuffy nose and a sore throat are some symptoms of the common cold in children. These are often caused by viruses, and can affect both children and adults alike. Seek medical attention if your child has a persistent high fever, appears lethargic, has a poor appetite, is breathless or a worsening headache.

Vomiting & Diarrhoea

Infections of the gut are common in babies and toddlers. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and tummy pains. It can get serious if your child loses too much fluid from their bodies and become dehydrated. Consult your paediatrician if your child is having high fever, persistent vomiting/loose stools, unusual lethargy, or has mucus and blood in the stools.

Urinary Tract Infections

Also called UTIs, these infections occur when bacteria build up in the bladder or/and kidneys of babies and children. Symptoms include fever, pain or a ‘burning’ sensation on passing urine, frequent urination, abdominal or back pain, or poor weight gain in infants. Consult your paediatrician who will test your child’s urine and advise on the treatment required.

Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is a common lung infection in young babies and children. Caused by viruses, the small air passages of the lung become swollen and congested with mucus. Your baby/toddler will need to be monitored for high fever, poor feeding, change in colour and breathlessness. Symptoms may worsen and ‘peak’ before gradually improving, usually over 1-2 weeks. Consult your paediatrician if you are in doubt.

Common Childhood Conditions

Common childhood conditions range from minor illnesses (like the common cold) to more serious conditions (like pneumonia) that may require hospitalisation. Other infections include bronchiolitis/bronchitis, stomach flu (gastroenteritis), chickenpox and Hand, Foot Mouth disease.

Babies and children may also have conditions that are non- infectious, such as:

Eczema

Also known as Atopic Dermatitis or ’sensitive skin’. Your child may be constantly scratching and complaining of itchy, dry skin. Moisturisers, anti-itch medications and wearing loose, cotton clothing would help. Steroid creams may be prescribed by the doctor depending on the severity. Bring your child to the doctor if the itch interferes with his daily activity or sleep, or if there is crusting, broken & weepy skin.

Colic

Common in young babies less than 4 months old, who are otherwise healthy. Symptoms include crying spells for more than 3 hours a day (especially evenings), for more than 3 days in a week, for 3 weeks. In the majority of cases, no specific treatment is required, and the crying resolves by itself by 4-6 months old. Techniques to help calm and soothe baby can be tried. Always check with your doctor if you are worried.

Constipation

Does your young one often strain to pass stools? Is he/she not pooping as often as he should be? He may have constipation, which can cause abdominal discomfort, fussiness and cracks at the anus causing blood in the stools. Babies and children can have varying bowel movements at different ages. Seek your paediatrician’s help if stooling is a persistent concern.

Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds can be frightening for the child and family members, but the good thing is.. they usually cause no harm. Bleeding usually occurs from the thin blood vessels in the middle part of the nose (‘septum’). It may occur more frequently in children who sleep in air-conditioned environments and in children with ‘sensitive noses’ ( allergic rhinitis).

Vaccinations & Immunisations

Vaccines protect your child from infectious diseases by encouraging the body’s immune system to produce antibodies; so that your child can fight the disease when they are next exposed to it.

It is important to protect your child against serious infectious diseases which can sometimes lead to serious complications and even be life-threatening.

However, not all infectious diseases have vaccines against them ( e.g. Hand, foot and mouth disease)

Optional vaccines include: vaccines for Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, Influenza and Chickenpox. It may be still important for your child to get these – do consult your doctor if you are in doubt.

Developmental Assessments

Developmental assessments are conducted at various stages as your child is growing, to ensure he/she is able to meet expected milestones in playing, learning, speaking, behaving and moving.

The main components include: gross motor, fine motor, speech & language and social-emotional development.

Parents, grandparents, and other caregivers are encouraged to participate in developmental monitoring of the child.

See your paediatrician for regular checks, and especially if you notice your child is not meeting certain milestones.

Newborn and Well-Baby Checks

You are encouraged to start looking for a paediatrician early on in your pregnancy to prepare for baby’s arrival.

Newborn Screening

Newborns are usually examined by a paediatrician within the first 24 hours after birth while in hospital.

The following checks will be done:

— measuring your baby’s weight, length, and head circumference

— a thorough physical examination from head to toe (checking baby’s eyes, neck, heart, breathing, reflexes, spine and hips, etc.)

— blood test for jaundice level (in some babies)

You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have, especially if you are a new parent and have questions related to baby care and feeding.

Well Baby Checks

After your baby gets discharged home, scheduled well- baby checks are important. This is the time your paediatrician is able to regularly check on your baby’s growth and development, feeding, jaundice ( especially in the first few weeks of life), sleeping habits etc.

Dr Wong will answer any questions that you may have. She will also share relevant information according to your baby’s age in the aspects of feeding, sleeping pattern etc.

Well baby visits are a chance for you to address any concerns for your baby, since parents are usually the first ones to notice changes in their baby’s behaviour or growth.
